How do I travel to Kenya with ease?

Kenya is easily accessible from many major cities in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and South Africa. Flights into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, connect daily from London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, New York, Dubai, Doha and Johannesburg.

While flights from Europe take just over eight hours, the direct flight from New York takes 15 hours. Travellers coming from other cities in the United States will need to travel through one of the cities mentioned above to reach Kenya.

Do I need a Visa?

Almost all visitors to Kenya need a visa to enter the country, although certain countries are exempt. Single entry, transit and courtesy visas can now be purchased online in advance via the Kenyan evisa portal. Visas are issued within two working days, and a single entry visa costs US$51 per person.*

Once your visa has been approved, please print out the evisa that will be sent to your account and bring it with you when you travel to Kenya. Please note that you will also need to have at least two blank pages in your passport, and that your passport will need to be valid for six months after your expected departure date from Kenya. For additional information, please read the FAQs on the evisa website or contact the Kenyan embassy in your country.

When is the best time to visit Finch Hattons?

It’s always a good time to travel to the magical place that is Tsavo – our home is exquisite all year round.

With our equatorial climate, we are defined more by rainfall than temperature. Tsavo temperature ranges from 27-33°C (81-88° F) in the daytime and 22-24°C (72-75° F) at night. The temperature is fairly consistent year round. Kenya experiences short ra ns in April and May and long rai ns in November and December. These periods don’t affect the safari or game viewing in Tsavo as rain rainfall is minimal in this region.

While the rainy seasons offer the chance to see the world around us spring to life, the dryer intervening months make it easier to see our many resident animals. Both are beautiful to witness.

What should I pack?

When it comes to packing for the bush, layers are key.

During our dryer months, be sure to bring a windbreaker, a hat, sunglasses, and a light padded jacket as the early morning and evening game drives can get a little cool. For the cooler and wetter months, bring a jumper or sweater, a scarf and a fleece or warm jacket. On game drives, it’s best to wear pale or neutral colours and a pair of closed shoes.

Around the camp, please feel free to wear whatever you like. While formal wear isn’t always practical, you are welcome to dress for your luxurious surroundings if you choose. Make sure you pack your swimsuit so that you can cool off in our swimming pool.

What about health and vaccines?

The World Health Organization recommends that all travellers be covered for hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and polio, regardless of their destination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following vaccinations for Kenya: hepatitis A and B, meningococcal meningitis, rabies and typhoid, and boosters for tetanus, diphtheria, polio and measles. Please note that you will also need to be vaccinated against yellow fever.

Finch Hattons is in a low-risk malaria area and malaria prophylaxis aren’t necessary. We do take precautions in our tents by spraying the tents during our turndown service and providing organic insect repellent. Closing the netted doors of your tent in the evenings will also help prevent mosquitoes and other insects from coming inside. If you wish, you are welcome to take prophylaxis as an additional precaution, and you should certainly take them if you are travelling to other high-risk areas.

What currencies do you accept?

At Finch Hattons, we accept Kenyan shillings, US dollars, euros and pounds, as well as Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Please note chat change will be given in Kenyan shillings, and that US dollar bills printed before the year 2000 are not accepted in Kenya.
