A camp like nothing on earth.

Finch Hattons is a luxury tented safari camp that combines its love for Tsavo with world-class facilities. The camp is completely isolated, so much so that you would be forgiven for forgetting that the rest of the world exists at all. In this place, it’s just you, the vast and varied terrain that stretches in every direction, and the many beasts and birds that call it home.

OUR CAMP

Our rebuild was carefully designed to maximise the opportunities to view our resident animals and birdlife. Sightings of hippo, crocodiles, elephants and various antelope around the camp are common, to say nothing of the 500 bird species that call Tsavo home. From our many viewing decks and dining areas, you can also enjoy the vast vistas that stretch in every direction. To the west, Mount Kilimanjaro is impossible to miss, and to the northeast, the Chyulu Hills undulate for miles.

Day and night game drives

From the vantage point of one of our open game viewing Land Cruisers, experience the delight of observing Africa’s greatest animals in their natural habitat, as well as the many diverse landscapes that make Tsavo so unique. The best times to spot wildlife are in the early morning and the late afternoon. We therefore offer two scheduled game drives at these times but can of course cater to your times and needs. Night game drives are also available to view the park’s nocturnal creatures, which include leopards, civets, genets and bush babies.

Bush walks and crater climbs

Accompanied by a safari guide and armed ranger, our bush walks, hikes and crater climbs offer you the chance to experience Tsavo’s fauna and flora first-hand. Your guide will explain the medicinal value of the trees and plants around you, and will help you spot and identify animal footprints and spoor. For the adventurous, a hike to the top of Oldonyo Larami hill offers stunning 360-degree views of Tsavo National Park.

Bush breakfast

Bush breakfasts are a chance to enjoy a full al fresco breakfast in the middle of the bush. This, truly, is an experience not to be missed.

Tsavo explorer adventures

Optional day excursions to Mzima Springs, Chyulu Hills, Shetani lava flow, the roaring rocks, poacher’s lookout, Amboseli National Park and Lake Jipe can also be arranged. Set off with a picnic basket and be ready for a full day’s worth of adventure.

Cultural visits

A cultural visit gives you an insight into the daily life of the Maasai in the nearby town of lltilal. The Maasai are a strong community that have retained their age-old traditions and cultures. A visit to lltilal will reveal some of these practices, including how the Maasai build their homes, which are known as manyattas. If you wish, our Maasai friends will also teach you some of their warrior and survivor skills, such as how to throw a spear and endure the African bush’s harshest conditions.

Young Explorers Club

Finch Hattons has a dedicated kids’ clubhouse that offers activities, games, TV and DVDs for children. The activities are wildlife focused and include bush survival skills, guided walks to learn about our surrounding flora and fauna, and lessons on making bows and arrows. There is also a resource centre at the camp, which helps children to learn about the insects and reptiles that are residents of Tsavo.

Shetani Lava Flow

Some 2000 years ago, a stream of fiery magma erupted from the nearby Chyulu Hills. “Shetani” means devil in Swahili, named by the local community as they believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. The vast expanse of folded black lava provides a spectacular view.

Chyulu Forest

A 45 minute drive and 1-3 hour hike through lush rainforest which shelters indigenous vegetation and wildlife with armed escorts provided. Truly an unforgettable experience.

Sundowners

Sundowners are a safari tradition. After a day our on the African plains, stop and watch the sunset with views of Mount Kilimanjaro and a gin and tonic (or your favourite end-of-day beverage) in hand. Hot hors d’oeuvres will also be served.

Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary

You are invited to visit the nearby Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, home to the endangered black rhino. This 90 square kilometre wildlife sanctuary provides a refuge and breeding ground for rhinos and a variety of other species.
