FINCH HATTONS, SEGERA RETREAT and Mahali Mzuri

Finch Hattons, Segera Retreat and Mahali Mzuri

The opportunity to visit three award-winning camps in three entirely different locations in Kenya makes this the supreme luxury safari experience.

Days 1 to 3: Finch Hattons

Mount Kilimanjaro, the Chyulu Hills and Finch Hattons’ our resident elephant, Iltilal, hippos, crocodiles, antelope and big cats will greet you on arrival at this one-of-a-kind camp in Tsavo West National Park. For the next few days, you are invited to explore our rich and varied landscape by going on game drives and bush walks with one of our experienced guides. They’ll tell you all about the area’s geological history, its diverse fauna and flora, and how life lives and thrives in Tsavo.

You might also choose to relax at our infinity pool, to attend one of our yoga classes or to indulge in a decadent spa treatment. Meals include sumptuous breakfasts, three-course lunches, six-course dinners, high teas and spectacular sundowners that cater specifically to your preferences and requirements. These culinary delights can be enjoyed at a variety of locations in the camp or in the bush.

Days 3 to 5: Segera Retreat

On your third day, you will fly to Segera Retreat in the Laikipia Plateau, which is flanked by Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west. Suffice to say, the views have to be seen to be believed. The Laikipia region boasts woodlands, grasslands, fertile riverbeds, and a cascading waterfall that feeds the lush valley around Kiseregai Creek. These water sources attract herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, warthog and many other species throughout the year.

Game drives, guided walks, spa treatments and sundowners deep in the bush are all on the agenda during your stay. You may also wish to pay a visit to the original yellow plane from the award-winning film, Out of Africa, which is housed in a hangar at Segera, or to visit a local women’s beading group where you can learn to bead and purchase handmade jewellery. Weather permitting, you might consider sleeping beneath the stars on one of Segera’s outdoor swing beds.

Days 5 to 7: Mahali Mzuri

Mahali Mzuri means “beautiful place” in Swahili and is a perfectly apt description for Sir Richard Branson’s tented safari in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of the Maasai Mara. Here, you are among one of the largest lion populations in the whole of the Maasai Mara. Led by expert Maasai guides, encounters with lions are almost a daily occurrence.

Your time at Mahali Mzuri will be defined by dramatic game sightings, expansive views and near-total solitude. Only vehicles belonging to conservancy partners are permitted to drive within its boundaries. Your Maasai guide can also teach you how to throw a spear, shoot a bow and arrow, or educate you on the Maasai way of life in one of Mahali Mzuri’s nearby Maasai communities. In these cases, a contribution to the village trust fund applies.

What is Finch Hattons?

Finch Hattons a luxury tented camp located in Tsavo West National Park. Ours is a magical place: almost 22,000 square kilometres of boundless African bush, complete with natural fresh water springs, rainforests, volcanoes, lava flow, and an abundance of fauna and flora. At our camp, we count elephant, lion, leopard, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and countless birds among our most treasured and frequent guests.

What is Mahali Mzuri?

Mahali Mzuri is Sir Richard Branson’s 12-tented luxury safari camp located in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem. The conservancy covers an area of 13,500 hectares and offers endless opportunities for game viewing, including spectacular places from which to enjoy the annual great migration.

What is Segera Retreat?

Segera Retreat is set in the heart of Laikipia, one of Kenya’s most exciting safari locations. Bordered by Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley it offers a diverse and magical space that is a haven for the country’s most celebrated wildlife species. Segera prides itself on offering a revitalising and authentic safari experience from the moment you arrive.

What kind of weather can I expect?

With our equatorial climate, we are defined more by rainfall than temperature. Our short rains fall between October and December, and longer rains typically fall between March and May. While the rainy seasons offer the chance to see the world around us spring to life, the dryer intervening months make it easier to see our many resident animals. Both are beautiful to witness. Temperatures remain at a pleasant 27 to 31°C (81 to 88F) during the day and 22 to 24°C (72 to 75F) at night year round.

Meet our passionate

TEAM

Finch Hattons is run by a passionate and experienced Kenyan team, about 60% of whom have been with the camp for over 15 years and about 40% since the very beginning. The original group joined as construction workers in 1993 and were trained on site. Many of the others contributed to the camp’s massive renovation in 2013. In very symbolic ways, this camp is theirs – they helped to build it from the ground up.

Our team is here to answer any of your questions about our remarkable corner of the world, and to make your time here exceptional in every way. Please don’t hesitate to speak to us if there’s anything you need.
