Echoes of Heritage: Exploring the Rich History of Our Camp

Step into luxury safari history with Finch Hattons, where every detail whispers tales of luxury safari entwined with adventure.

At the heart of our camp lies the legacy of Denys Finch Hattons, a man whose name became synonymous with safari experiences in the early 1900s. As the scion of nobility, Denys redefined luxury in the wild, treating guests to a symphony of champagne, gourmet dining, and the timeless melodies of Mozart under the African skies.

But Denys was more than a purveyor of indulgence; he was a conservation pioneer, instrumental in creating over 50 national parks across East Africa. His passion for the wilderness echoes in every corner of our camp, inspiring us to honour his heritage while embracing the future of safari tourism.

In 1993, the Gehlot family and visionary hotelier Peter Frank embarked on a journey to recreate the magic of Denys Finch Hattons’ era. With meticulous attention to detail, they crafted an oasis where luxury meets adventure, where each moment is a nod to the golden age of safari.

From the delicate china to the gleaming brass gramophones, every aspect of our camp reflects the glamour of yesteryears. But our team, the beating heart of Finch Hattons, is the pinnacle that truly elevates the experience. With warmth and hospitality flowing in their veins, they ensure that every guest feels like royalty upon their arrival.

In 2015, the KG Group, now the main family owning the camp, Finch Hattons, underwent a complete refurbishment, elevating the camp’s facilities and guest experience to new heights.

The renovation refreshed the entire camp, compromising 17 luxury-tented guest suites and extensive facilities constructed to leave a gentle footprint on this delicate ecosystem, prioritising an eco-friendly yet high-end safari experience. Since being awarded Architectural Digest’s award for Best New Safari Camp, Finch Hattons has ensured that the camp’s environmental impact is reduced through projects like an organic herb and vegetable garden on-site and a new PV solar park, which provides all the camp’s electricity needs and significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

As we celebrate more than 30 years of excellence, we remain committed to upholding the standards set by our founding fathers. As custodians of our legacy, KG Group carry forward the torch of hospitality with pride, rooted in a history that spans generations.

At Finch Hattons, the spirit of adventure awaits, where history and luxury converge to create an unforgettable safari experience. Join us on a journey through time, where the echoes of Denys Finch Hattons’ legacy still resonate in the African wilderness.
