FINCH HATTONS, SEGERA RETREAT and Mahali Mzuri

Finch Hattons, Segera Retreat and Mahali Mzuri

The opportunity to visit three award-winning camps in three entirely different locations in Kenya makes this the supreme luxury safari experience.

Days 1 to 3: Finch Hattons

Mount Kilimanjaro, the Chyulu Hills and Finch Hattons’ our resident elephant, Iltilal, hippos, crocodiles, antelope and big cats will greet you on arrival at this one-of-a-kind camp in Tsavo West National Park. For the next few days, you are invited to explore our rich and varied landscape by going on game drives and bush walks with one of our experienced guides. They’ll tell you all about the area’s geological history, its diverse fauna and flora, and how life lives and thrives in Tsavo.

You might also choose to relax at our infinity pool, to attend one of our yoga classes or to indulge in a decadent spa treatment. Meals include sumptuous breakfasts, three-course lunches, six-course dinners, high teas and spectacular sundowners that cater specifically to your preferences and requirements. These culinary delights can be enjoyed at a variety of locations in the camp or in the bush.

Days 3 to 5: Segera Retreat

On your third day, you will fly to Segera Retreat in the Laikipia Plateau, which is flanked by Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west. Suffice to say, the views have to be seen to be believed. The Laikipia region boasts woodlands, grasslands, fertile riverbeds, and a cascading waterfall that feeds the lush valley around Kiseregai Creek. These water sources attract herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, warthog and many other species throughout the year.

Game drives, guided walks, spa treatments and sundowners deep in the bush are all on the agenda during your stay. You may also wish to pay a visit to the original yellow plane from the award-winning film, Out of Africa, which is housed in a hangar at Segera, or to visit a local women’s beading group where you can learn to bead and purchase handmade jewellery. Weather permitting, you might consider sleeping beneath the stars on one of Segera’s outdoor swing beds.

Days 5 to 7: Mahali Mzuri

Mahali Mzuri means “beautiful place” in Swahili and is a perfectly apt description for Sir Richard Branson’s tented safari in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of the Maasai Mara. Here, you are among one of the largest lion populations in the whole of the Maasai Mara. Led by expert Maasai guides, encounters with lions are almost a daily occurrence.

Your time at Mahali Mzuri will be defined by dramatic game sightings, expansive views and near-total solitude. Only vehicles belonging to conservancy partners are permitted to drive within its boundaries. Your Maasai guide can also teach you how to throw a spear, shoot a bow and arrow, or educate you on the Maasai way of life in one of Mahali Mzuri’s nearby Maasai communities. In these cases, a contribution to the village trust fund applies.

What sets Finch Hattons apart?

Finch Hattons is no ordinary safari experience. We are defined by our must-be-seen-to-be-believed natural beauty, our luxurious five-star camp, our unwavering commitment to excellence and our warm, Kenyan hospitality. In some ways, what makes us unique is difficult to describe – it is something subtle and intangible, a particular kind of romance, a glimpse into a prehistoric past, and the chance to leave the world behind entirely.

Is it safe to travel alone?

Yes, it is perfectly safe to travel alone in Kenya, provided you use your common sense and general discretion. Once you arrive at Finch Hattons, we can guarantee your safety and security.

What animals and birds will I likely see?

There are many animals that can be seen right from the comfort of your tent or the camp’s many viewing decks, including hippos, crocodiles, terrapins and baboons. Move a little beyond our camp and you’re likely to see Tsavo’s famous red elephants, as well as lions, leopards, buffalos, hartebeest, zebra, giraffe, oryx, bushbuck, waterbuck and lesser kudu (unique to Tsavo). Tsavo is also home to 500 different species of birds, 260 of which have been spotted in our camp.

What kind of weather can I expect?

With our equatorial climate, we are defined more by rainfall than temperature. Our short rains fall between October and December, and longer rains typically fall between March and May. While the rainy seasons offer the chance to see the world around us spring to life, the dryer intervening months make it easier to see our many resident animals. Both are beautiful to witness. Temperatures remain at a pleasant 27 to 31°C (81 to 88F) during the day and 22 to 24°C (72 to 75F) at night year round.

How many nights should I stay?

This answer is simple: as many as you can. Ideally, we recommend that you stay with us for at least three nights. With so much to experience, anything less is simply not enough. Remember that if you stay for three nights, you fly for free.

ADVENTURE & CULTURAL Safari Experience

Adventure and Cultural Safari Experience

For our most adventurous and culturally curious guests, Finch Hattons offers a range of excursions together with an unrivalled luxury safari experience in the heart of Tsavo West National Park, an area that boasts the greatest biodiversity in the world.

African adventure

Speak to our guides about visiting Mzima Springs, hiking through the Chyulu Hills rainforests, summiting a volcano, exploring the only, and youngest lava flow in Africa, or taking a trip to Amboseli National Park or Lake Jipe. With a picnic basket in hand, you’re ready for the day ahead.

Magical Maasai

Our cultural visits are available to give you some insight into the life of the Maasai people. The Maasai are an ethnic group that inhabit both Kenya and Tanzania and still live the largely pastoral life of their ancestors. We recommend a cultural visit to the nearby Lolarami Cultural Boma. The visit gives you a glimpse of the Maasai’s daily lifestyle from milking the cows to building Manyattas, their traditional homes

What adventurous activities are available?

Day and night game drives, bush walks, crater climbs, full-day hikes and outings to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, Mzima Springs, Chyulu Hills, Amboseli National Park and Lake Jipe are all on offer. You might also choose to climb to the top of Oldoinyo Ololarami hill, which offers stunning 360-degree views of Tsavo National Park.

What cultural activities are available?

Our cultural visits will give you an insight into the daily life of the Maasai in the nearby town of lltilal. The Maasai are a strong community that have retained their age-old traditions and cultures. A visit to lltilal will reveal some of these practices, including how the Maasai build their homes, which are known as manyattas. If you wish, our Maasai friends will also teach you some of their warrior and survivor skills, such as how to throw a spear and endure the African bush’s harshest conditions.

FINCH FAMILY Safari Experience

Finch Family Safari Experience

Finch Hattons is a family-friendly destination, with facilities and activities tailored for every generation. We are one of the only safari camps in Kenya to offer two luxury, 200m2, two-bedroom and lounge suites that are suitable for the youngest and oldest of family members. One of these suites is suitable for disabled ambulant guests.

Young Explorers’ Club

Our Young Explorers’ Club offers a dedicated children’s programme to ensure that your little ones’ time in Kenya isn’t only happy and fun, but educational and memorable too. At Finch Hattons, we don’t believe that we inherited the Earth from our ancestors, but that we borrow it from our children. We want to instil a lifelong passion for the bush in the young adventurers under our care, so that they will always appreciate and strive to conserve it.

Engaging Activities

Various activities are available for our younger guests, including bush survival classes, guided walks to learn about the area’s fauna and flora, and lessons on how to identify animals and birds by their footprints, spoor and calls. Our resource centre is a mine of information on Tsavo, including its history, geology, ecosystems and wildlife.

Bonfire Family Time

As parents, you are welcome to be part of this experience or to have some time to yourselves. In the evenings, our Maasai guides share myths and folk stories about the origin of Tsavo’s landscapes and wildlife around a bonfire.

Please note children have to be a minimum of six years old to visit Finch Hattons.

Do your tents cater for multiple family members?

Yes, we have two family suites that feature two en-suite bedrooms connected by a lounge. The family suites are ideal for larger or multi-generational families.

Do you cater for elderly guests?

Yes, our family suites are ideally suited for elderly family members, who can enjoy Finch Hattons alongside their children and grandchildren without being in a separate tent. One of our family suites is also suitable for ambulant disabled guests.

What activities are available?

There’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy while you’re at Finch Hattons. Day and night game drives, bush walks, full-day hikes and outings to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, Mzima Springs, Chyulu Hills, Amboseli National Park and Lake Jipe are all on offer. Do you offer babysitting services?

No, unfortunately not. Since children under the age of six are not allowed at Finch Hattons, we do not offer babysitting services.

We do offer many activities for children with an excellent childminder, Agnus. Come through to camp and introduce your family to our family.

Are flying doctor’s services available?

AMREF, the flying doctors organisation based in Nairobi, provides air evacuation services in medical emergencies across East Africa, as well as air ambulance transfers between medical facilities. AMREF operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as a vital link between remote areas and AMREF’s control centre at Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Our staff will also administer first aid until professional medics arrive.

What sets Finch Hattons apart for celebrations?

Imagine looking up from a magnificent seven-course meal deep within the African bush to find your favourite person – or people – gathered around you. Imagine spending your days together exploring Tsavo’s natural beauty, enjoying sundowners with views over Mount Kilimanjaro, and gazing at the stars on one of our viewing decks. Imagine the memories you’ll create. At Finch Hattons, we pride ourselves on our unobtrusive and sensitive approach to celebrations – we know that you want first-class service and absolute privacy, and we’re here to make it a reality.

How many people can Finch Hattons host?

We can host 38 people in our camp, and you are welcome to book out Finch Hattons for your exclusive use. If your party is larger, we will help you arrange additional accommodation at other camps nearby.

What locations are available for me to use?

You can choose to enjoy your meals and refreshments in a range of locations – why not try a different spot every time? Arguably the most memorable place is in the beauty of our natural surroundings. Our al fresco feasts range from a bush breakfast laid out on the plains to elegant dinners served beneath the African sky. You can also make use of our dining pavilion, star gazing terrace, and bar and lounge.

A cultural visit to the Maasai town of Iltilal can also be arranged, where you can observe the traditions of the Maasai people first-hand. If you choose to stay in camp, you can relax on one of our many viewing decks, watch our resident hippos and crocodiles wallow in the nearby springs, or enjoy an indulgent massage at our spa.

What activities are available for children?

Finch Hattons offers a dedicated children’s programme to ensure that your little ones’ time in Kenya isn’t only happy and fun, but educational and memorable too. Our various activities include bush survival classes, guided walks to learn about the area’s fauna and flora, and lessons on how to identify animals and birds by their footprints, spoor and calls. Our resource centre is a mine of information on Tsavo, including its history, geology, ecosystems and wildlife.

Meet our passionate

TEAM

Finch Hattons is run by a passionate and experienced Kenyan team, about 60% of whom have been with the camp for over 15 years and about 40% since the very beginning. The original group joined as construction workers in 1993 and were trained on site. Many of the others contributed to the camp’s massive renovation in 2013. In very symbolic ways, this camp is theirs – they helped to build it from the ground up.

Setting the standard in luxury camps, Finch Hattons hospitality has become synonymous with fine dining, exemplary service and outstanding safaris.

Our team is here to answer any of your questions about our remarkable corner of the world, and to make your time here exceptional in every way. Please don’t hesitate to speak to us if there’s anything you need.
