Five Generations of Hospitality
Upholding the legacy of our founding fathers
Forged by a fortuitous introduction through mutual friends, Finch Hattons was established by renowned hotelier Peter Frank and KS Gehlot in 1993. This remarkable partnership instilled our core values and set the unprecedented standard that continues to define our camp 30 years later.
After Peter’s retirement in 2010, the mantle of operation was passed onto the KG Group, a multi-disciplinary group of companies owned by the Gehlot Family. With Indian ancestry, the Gehlot Family has established firm roots in Kenya over five generations, with a captivating history in the Tsavo region that serves as a testament to their enduring legacy.
They are proud to continue to uphold the esteemed reputation and level of excellence earned by Finch Hattons founding fathers.
Jonathan Mutisya
On the 28th July 1991, a 19 year old Jonathan was to have a chance meeting that would change the trajectory of his life. Whilst working with an organisation setting up water pans for Rhinos at Ngulia, he met Peter Frank, the founder of Finch Hattons. 4 days later, on the 2nd of August, 1991 Jonathan would arrive at the site where Finch Hattons stands today, to commence work on the Camp. The rest as they say is history. Jonathan, mentored by Peter Frank, took the title of “right hand man” to heart and has been the backbone of the Camp ever since the first brick was laid.
Nurturing and developing the team for the past 3 decades, Jonathan will be the first to tell you that his job is not a job- but a passion, the team at camp are not employees but family and their shared experiences are what binds them.
William Kinaka
A young school graduate happened to speak to a classmate who recommended he apply for a job at Finch Hattons and that’s how a 23 year old William started his career at Finch Hattons 27 years ago.
Starting out as a waiter, then moving to the Front Desk and eventually being promoted to Assistant Camp Manager, Williams’ passion for people is plain to see. Our Guests, hailing from across the globe are his true passion and his philosophy is simple- he wants every guest to experience something exceptional!
Chiti Mtenzi
Passionate about nature, Chiti has been sharing the beauty of Tsavo with our guests for the past 30 years. Guiding guests on nature walks within and outside the Camp.
Tales of encounters with elephants, hippos & leopards as well as his exceptional knowledge on the abundant birdlife in the area are just some of the gems Chiti shares that enhances the guest experience.
Chef Kennedy
At the heart of his cooking philosophy, Executive Chef Kennedy’s approach is simple – he cooks with his heart. This is why he refers to his style of food preparation as “soul” cooking. Chef Kennedy’s culinary focus is centred around the farm-to-table philosophy, utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create unforgettable dishes that combine various flavour profiles.
His passion for cooking is amplified by interacting with our customers who have dubbed his culinary creations as “some of the best food in the world”. Seeing their delight and eagerness to return gives him a deep sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment.
Felix Mutinda
With a big presence and an even bigger smile, Felix is hard to miss! Unassuming yet incredibly perceptive to what guests need before they even know they need it, Felix has honed his art of service excellence for the past 30 years at Finch Hattons.
Inspired by our guests and their stories, his ultimate goal is ensuring that each guest has an incredible Finch Hattons experience.
Vincent Kyalo
Vincent Kyalo, our F&B Supervisor with over 27 years of experience at Finch Hattons, finds joy in making our guests happy and forging connections with both staff and visitors. Vincent greatly admires his Manager’s unwavering discipline and precise attention to detail, and takes pride in his own professional advancements, which have earned him recognition, promotion, and empowerment within the company.
Vincent’s ultimate goal is to one day ascend to the position of Manager and achieve financial independence through his own business ventures following retirement.
Boniface Yumbya
For 27 years, Boniface has been a Senior Waiter at Finch Hattons and loves demonstrating his expertise in food and beverage to different customers. He respects his colleagues in every department for their interdependent efforts to refine their work.
One extraordinary experience he had at Finch Hattons was attending a sundowner evening where a leopard pounced its prey on the spot. His personal aspirations are to construct and leave a legacy at work, provide for his family and children, and help them reach their life visions.
Robert Loka
Robert has been the Stores Supervisor at Finch Hattons for an impressive 28 years, taking great joy in managing costs to ensure the smooth operation of the camp.
As he admires the leadership of the management team, who set the required goals, Robert fondly remembers his first tour to Amboseli National Park, describing it as amazing. His personal ambition is to provide the best future opportunities for his children through education.
